TORONTO CITY ROOTS FESTIVAL RETURNS

JUNE 22  - RIVERBOAT REVIVAL AT HUGH’S ROOM

JUNE 23, 24 -  FREE FESTIVAL ON 3 STAGES

DISTILLERY DISTRICT  FINEST IN FOLK, ROOTS, BLUES

City Roots Festival is back for its 4th year, now presented in two venues:

Riverboat Revival at Hugh’s Room on Friday June 22 followed by two free days of great music in the Distillery District, Saturday and Sunday June 23 and 24!

Once again, City Roots Festival has secured a strong talent line-up and a diverse series of workshops. The Riverboat Revival, (City Roots Gala Opening event), is being held at Hugh’s Room and will be a loving tribute to Toronto’s famed and seminal coffeehouse on Yorkville Avenue in the 1960s.   The Riverboat was Canada’s premiere folk club.

City Roots artists (including Danny Marks, Mia Sheard, Blair Packham,  James Gordon and Greg Quill)  will perform the songs made famous by such performers as Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, Gordon Lightfoot, Bruce Cockburn, Murray McLauchlan,  Lonnie Johnson, Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee, Buffy Ste. Marie, Phil Ochs, and Jerry Jeff  Walker.

The evening will feature a silent auction of handicrafts, donated by local craftspeople to support City Roots.

Hughs’ Room is located at  2261 Dundas St. W.   Reservations 416.531.6604

Tickets $15 in advance/$17 at the door

On Saturday June 23 and continuing on Sunday June 24, City Roots moves over to the Distillery District for its fourth year.    Starting at 1PM each day, there will be three stages of music featuring 35 individual acts.

City Roots at the Distillery is a free event, with donations accepted.

City Roots has always been a songwriter’s festival, and this year the line-up is particularly strong, with a four-hour Song Celebration on Saturday June 23 hosted by Blair Packham, and featuring such powerful writers as Bill Bourne, Kirsten Jones, Melanie Doane, Mia Sheard, Greg Quill and others.

The fourth annual City Roots Festival is definitely back to the roots – to the idea of music being free, of people performing for the love of it as opposed to the money to be made – what a concept! And the talent is undeniable – the City Roots festival will provide a great opportunity to really discover new artists and hear some more established as the festival harkens back to an earlier time when it was all about the music and not about headliners.  What’s not to love?

Schedule and performer bios will be posted to Festival Website

”City Roots is as remarkable for the diversity of its performers as the novelty of its Distillery District setting....”  Toronto Life

“…convincingly addresses the multicultural nature of this city and its many quirky appetites....” Toronto Star

“…City Roots isn’t your father’s folk festival. It’s a three day event showcasing a variety of musical styles. Best of all you don’t have to drive for hours to get there…”   Globe and Mail
